Semiotics- Glee
In class we looked at this Glee poster and the techniques which the director chose and the reasoning behind certain choices.
DENOTATION: The teacher right side of the screen pulling the plug out of the 'E', and who is also in a attention grabbing red tracksuit with an angry expression on her face.
CONATATION: The use of the colour red which the teacher is wearing presents her as the 'baddie' of the show as red has the connation of blood and evil. The way she appears very close to the screen makes her seem superior to everybody else in the shot. Having her pull of the power out shows she's the antagonist of the series and being the main obstacle in the way of everything.
DENTOTAION: Cheerleader sitting on top of the 'E'
CONNATATION: The cheerleader sitting higher than everybody shows her hierarchy but consequently having her sitting further away from everybody makes her seem quite an isolated and lonely character. The 'E' could also symbolize envy which she could feel.
DENTOTAION: Lady in green gazing
CONNATATION: Having a motherly figure in the background is very stereotypical and is something that the audience can relate to. Having her in a light green also insinuates as being a very ditzy and naïve character the way she is staring at the teacher could suggest a romantic aspect to the show.
DENTOTAION: The couple in the middle gazing at each other
CONNATATION: The colour blue portrays hope which reflects the two sides of the school uniting this also portrays them as very confident. The way the cameras main focus is on them both shows they are the main focus of the show. There is also a lot of romance coming of off there body language towards each other.
